NORDIC LOOK – an initiative in Riga by Sweden and the Nordic Council of Ministers’ to strengthen the fashion, design and textile industry in the Baltic Sea region by creating a joint platform for sustainable fashion and industrial cluster cooperation.
By special invitation from the Nordic Council of Ministers’, national fashion institutions across the Nordic countries are joining forces in the NORDIC LOOK project to showcase the fashions representative of their region to Baltic and Russian markets. Furthermore the ambition is to let the actors of the fashion, design and textile industries in both the Nordic and Baltic countries and in north-west Russia to meet and discuss topics on industrial cooperation on sustainable fashion and marketing at the NORDIC LOOK forum in Riga this fall.
The Swedish Fashion Council, the Danish Fashion Institute, Icelandic Fashion Council, Oslo Fashion Week, and Helsinki Design Wee all has joined forces to orchestrate the NORDIC LOOK event. The planning is coordinated by Nordic Council of Ministers’ office in Latvia, along with the Danish Cultural Institute in Riga, Riga City Council, the Swedish Embassy in Latvia and the Baltic Fashion Federation.
Sweden, home to the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ for 2008, is set on making the Nordic creative industries more competitive globally and on developing collaboration with its neighbours across the Baltic Sea. To illustrate these primary objectives, the event will run under the slogans Cooperate Regionally – Act Globally and Regional Competitiveness and Sustainable Fashion.
The NORDIC LOOK event will take place 4-5 November during the RIGA FASHION WEEK, at Riga Art Space, the newly opened exhibition hall in the old city of Riga. The event will consist of two parts. While Nordic fashion shows and exhibitions will comprise one part of the program, a conference and meeting forum will be held for the design, fashion and textile industries in the Nordic and Baltic countries and in north-west Russia.
The aim of the event is twofold. For Nordic fashion and design it seeks to open a new door to Baltic and Russian markets. Simultaneously the event hopes to spark dialogue among major Baltic, Nordic and Russian players in the fashion and textile industries, with issues of competitiveness and collaboration as its focus, in order to confront the challenges of today’s global market.
The Nordic fashion show package will consist of 5 different shows ranging from young up-and-coming designers, to well-established names and brands; to Haute Couture and the leading names in the fashion and design industry. Along with the shows the exhibition by well-known swedish designer of jewellery Efva Attling will be presented.
The conference part of NORDIC LOOK will invite representatives from educational institutions, individual designers and brands, entrepreneurs, production companies, branch organisations and distributors, as well as politicians and other decision makers who support a flourishing of design, fashion and textile industry in the Baltic Sea region.
The program will be comprised of lectures, workshops and match-making opportunities for networking and meeting potential clients and partners from the opposite shore of the Baltic Sea. In a dazzling first evening, a Gala Networking event with entertainment and attractions will inaugurate the event.
NORDIC LOOK aims to become an annual forum for the fashion, design and textile industry in the Baltic Sea region in order to promote artistic and industrial competitiveness and to establish enduring networks.
Beyond these ambitions, the planners see still more for the future ahead. Organizers of NORDIC LOOK envision this process culminating in a globally competitive fashion, design and textile industry cluster in the Baltic Sea region, renowned for its trademark, Sustainable Fashion.
